Ingredients and substitutions

Portion sizes are in the recipe card below.

  • Olive oil. We have also successfully used both lard and grass-fed tallow. You can also use a knob of butter.
  • Ground beef. The best ground beef for keto is also the cheapest, which is the highest fat version you can get at the grocery store. Steer clear of lean ground beef.
  • Salt. Iodized salt is best because it has extra health benefits, tastes the same, and helps thyroid function.
  • White pepper. Ground
  • Bacon. Do not use flavored bacon, as many of them have sugar added.
  • Onion.
  • Dill pickles. If you’re one of the 50% that don’t like pickles, you can leave them out.
  • Tomato ketchup. Sugar-free.
  • Yellow mustard. Optional. If you can find a sugar-free version, even better. It makes a minimal impact on macros.
  • Mayonaisse. You must buy whole egg mayonnaise as just about everything else is fake with sugar, and who knows what else is added? We make our own Low Carb Mayonnaise.
  • Worcestershire sauce.
  • Garlic powder. You can chop or crush fresh garlic if you desire.
  • Cheddar cheese. Always use full-fat cheese.
  • Eggs. Large organic, free-range eggs taste the best and are the most humane.
  • Heavy cream.

This recipe is fantastic! The egg and cream topping makes this recipe stand out. I even make it when I’m not doing keto.
